LILAS Fall Internship Reflections

As we become accustomed to the winter weather and we launch into a new year, LILAS Wellness wants to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our interns these past couple of months. We’ll really miss working with them day to day, but we’re also so grateful to have them still be part of our community. Here are some of their thoughts on their internship experience:

Yena Jang, Marketing & Communications Intern

How did your LILAS internship experience shape your understanding of wellness?
My LILAS internship helped me better understand that wellness goes beyond physical and mental health. I learned more about holistic wellness and how in order to have optimal health, my emotions, spirit, and mind need to be healthy as well.
What skills did you start to develop and/or sharpen?

Through this internship I learned about the insight features of Instagram and got better at analyzing these numbers over the past few months. I was able to pick better hashtags for each photo that would help reach a wider audience. I was also able to create better content on Canva!

What accomplishment from your internship are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my work in helping with the PR outreach efforts. This was my first time writing a PR pitch and I really enjoyed researching about publications and writers who share the same passions as LILAS.

How has your LILAS experience influenced your future academic and career plans?

My experience with LILAS has inspired me to continue working towards a career in the healthcare and policy field. Seeing all the customers talk about their period pain and how LILAS has helped them made me realize that there isn't enough being done for women's health on the political side. The women in this community have inspired me and I feel empowered.

Do you have anything else you would like to share?

I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to intern with LILAS. Everyone on the team is so lovely to work with and brought so many unique perspectives to the table. They are truly some of the smartest and kindest people I have worked with! It was such an honor to be on the LILAS team! Thank you!!

How did your LILAS internship experience shape your understanding of wellness?

This internship has helped shape my understanding of wellness in some really cool ways — to say the least. My biggest takeaway is that wellness takes self advocacy and resilience. I don’t think that holistic wellness just happens totally naturally. I have found that it’s a practice that takes active work and agency.

What skills did you start to develop and/or sharpen?

Not only did I develop my research skills tremendously, but I also learned how to share my findings with others. Having only done research academically and independently, I never thought about all the ways that research could be collaborative. I learned so much working collectively.

What accomplishment from your internship are you most proud of?

I am very proud of the comprehensive research I did on women’s health, and the findings I pursued on the reality of women’s unmet wellness needs. Over the past few months, I’ve become very comfortable navigating this field— and am proud of my discoveries and the narratives I worked to shape.

How has your LILAS experience influenced your future academic and career plans?

This internship experience has solidified a lot of my passions — namely my interests in women’s health and health inequities. I think that an inclusive, women-led organization likes LILAS sets a great precedent for the future of health and wellness. I am heartened by socially conscious companies like LILAS, and grateful for all the women who take on important leadership roles in our society. Looking forward, I hope to make great impacts on the reality of injustice and inequity in health and health care.

Do you have anything else you would like to share?

I can't wait to see all that LILAS accomplishes!
